i am going to write this post in small caps, because barry always did…
as I pour over the facebook updates, look at messages that have been send to barry’s facebook profile i realise that barry was truly a man who impacted many lives.
for one, he impacted mine and i was hoping that i would only have to remember these things in years to come as i might have had the opportunity to pay tribute to him when he retired or something like that. now he is retired, supernumery, or whatever. one specific thing i remember was sitting at a coffee shop in eastgate and hearing from him that he believed that i was indeed called to the ministry. i will never forget this since it was the watershed moment for me deciding to candidate. there are many other defining moments that barry was a part of.
he was passionate, inspiring, talented and loved what he did. i am so happy that he found fulfilment in life and that he found happiness in elaine and the kids.
thank you barry for sharing a part of your life with me and for what you mean to me. and in memory of the rebel i knew who didn’t care what people said or thought, i do exactly what he would have done…fuck it barry! you will be missed.
This picture captures his essence so well. I have awesome memories of playing in a band with him. I loved listening to him sing - there was a James Taylor-ness to his voice - and I can actually hear his loud, open laugh while I write this. My heart breaks for Elaine and the children.
Today after hearing the news about Barry all I could think about doing was lifting a beer to him. We loved to share a beer at lunch. The world seems like a darker place without you. I also can't get the image out of my mind of Barry and St Peter competing to see whose halo is brighter - I think Barry might win.
Today there is a celebration in Heaven as Barry is welcomed with open arms into his eternal home. While we have lost one of the worlds finest, Heaven is shining just a little brighter with his light.
His life, though far too short, impacted so many others that we can only sit back and thank God that we were privileged enough to know him. He will be sorely missed.
I pray especially for his wife and children at this time and just ask God to hold them a little closer as they mourn the wonderful man that was the heart of their family.
May Heavens light shine forever brighter with its newest member.
I will never forget Barry taking me under his wing when I got to Joberg... What an awesome character. I should be sad but all I have is great memories, its hard to grieve when every thought you have of the man is a happy one.
My fondest memories of Barry would have to be whispered comments and raucous laughter from the back table on Chrysalis weekends.
I will never forget, when a truly nervouse "Single-Life" speaker stood up to give his talk, Barry searching frantically on the table for something. What he was looking for was a banana and 2 apples that he put together to form a rather rudimentary *insert euphamism here*. The poor guy needed five minutes to calm down and re-gether his thoughts before continuing his talk.
Barry, your never-holier-than-thou personality is what we will miss.
So long Inspiration. (Ode to Barry Marshall) 3rd September 2009
What to say? I can’t pretend that we were very close Never shared home dinners together But maybe in Christ things are different
I remember a crowd 250 strong And you standing in front Saying we could worship God Like the band; Sting…using “silly words” So we sang: “na na na na na… Every move I make I make in You”
Then on the steps of a dining hall At a Youth Pastor Bash I recall you Playing Dave Matthews songs on a guitar
There was something about the way you spoke of Jesus, About our God, who has become more and more real in my life Because of your outlook on life and ways of including Jesus in this life I became a Youth Pastor… 9 years ago.
Thank you for being an inspiration! Just like that, you are gone Did you wake up that day knowing it was your last? It’s sad to say goodbye
The world is hurt The world needs good and real godly leaders to lead its people With your passing, there is now one less In my humble way, I feel a sense of urgency to serve God again.
To speak and serve in love and truth Barry, thank you.
the last message I received from barry was after I told him Sam and I are pregnant with our first. It read:
ReplyDeleteFucking awesome. Jou ou doring!

He was a boy at heart, with the wisdom of a man beyond his years.

Thank you for being an inspiration!
Just like that, you are gone
Did you wake up that day knowing it was your last?
It’s sad to say goodbye
Yet in the non cliché way we rather say…
“See you later”
Death has no sting, it has no final say
It’s a sort of entrance way to yet more of His goodness
The world is hurt
The world needs good and real godly leaders to lead its people
With your passing, there is now one less
In my humble way, I feel a sense of urgency to serve God again.
To speak and serve in love and truth
Barry, thank you.
I still remember...
